Members of the University community wishing to participate in this pilot must agree to a confidential, mediated review of their submission with Library faculty. The University Libraries, in partnership with the Office of Research & Economic Development, is offering a mediated pilot program to evaluate iThenticate. Papers reviewed using this service are NOT added to or indexed in any other database and remain the proprietary property of the individual author. This program is often used by publishers to check originality of submitted articles prior to publication. IThenticate is meant to assist academic authors in avoiding plagiarism and copyright infringement when preparing items for publication and is NOT intended for classroom use. To request training and see upcoming training sessions please visit the ITS event calendar: Turnitin training and support are provided by Information Technology Services. Submitted documents are added to a database of material from colleges and universities around the country.

Turnitin compares student work against 60 billion web pages 600 million student papers that have been submitted to the Turnitin database over 100 million articles from professional journals, periodicals, and publications. Similar to BlackboardРІР‚в„ўs SafeAssign service, Turnitin can be integrated into Canvas courses and allows instructors to review originality reports of student work. Turnitin was made specifically for classroom use and is intended for reviewing student work.

They are not intended for use by second-party individuals to check originality. Turnitin and iThenticate require submissions to be made by the sole or first-author of the work. This isnt evidence of plagiarism, but it provides data from which plagiarism may be judged.

Below is a brief overview to each and how best to use them. The role for software such as iThenticate is merely to provide evidence of similarity.

The University community has free access to two different web-based originality-checking tools geared to helping writers avoid plagiarism. It helps editors, authors and researchers prevent misconduct by comparing manuscripts against its database of over 56 billion web pages and 142 million content items, including 44 million works from 590 scholarly publisher participants of CrossCheck, a service offered by CrossRef and powered by iThenticate software.Turnitin was made specifically for classroom use and is intended for reviewing student work. IThenticate is the leading provider of professional plagiarism detection and prevention technology used worldwide by scholarly publishers and research institutions that ensures the originality of written work prior to publication. I believe iThenticate will allow us check the papers more easily and accurately and increase the standards of our journal.' Uthpala Karunarathne, scientific officer at the Journal of National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka, welcoming the initiative, said: 'All this time we have been using free online plagiarism checkers which does not allow checking the whole paper but parts of the paper due to word limitations.

'Within a few days of its availability, the editors of the JOL journals have shown their keen interest in incorporating the iThenticate software into their workflows to check for plagiarism and thus improve the quality of their journals,' said Sioux Cumming, programme manager, Journals Online at INASP.
